The Señorío de Bertiz Natural Park is one of the most valuable natural spaces in Navarre, in the municipality of Oieregi in the Bertizarana Valley, between the Baztán and Malerreka valleys. Declared a Natural Park in 1984 in fulfilment of the wishes of its owners, Pedro Ciga and Dorotea Fernández, who bequeathed their estate to the Foral Community of Navarre on condition it be conserved in its natural state. The park covers more than 2,000 hectares of Atlantic deciduous forest of beech, oak and alder, offering a rich and diverse ecosystem. It is home to deer, roe deer, wild boar and a wide variety of birds, including a notable number of woodpecker species, an indicator of the quality of the mature forest. One of the most visited areas is the Historic-Artistic Garden, created in the 19th century and later expanded, mixing native and exotic species, California redwoods, Chinese ginkgos, cedars and camellias, in a unique botanical space with ponds, pergolas and Art Nouveau walkways. The park also has a Nature Interpretation Centre offering educational information on conservation, biodiversity and ecological values through panels, scale models and interactive resources. A trail network of varying difficulty and length allows visitors to explore the landscapes, reach viewpoints and discover traditional sites such as the Aizkolegi Palace at the top of the hill, or connect with nearby villages and valleys.
